GEO Explained: Helping People Find Your Business in ChatGPT and Other AI Tools

The short answer: GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It means improving your content so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews can mention your business in their answers. While traditional SEO focuses on positions in a results list, GEO aims to make your business part of the answer. The main areas are clearly structured content, specific and verifiable facts, structured data and a recognisable brand.

Why isn't traditional SEO enough on its own?

Search habits are changing. A growing number of potential customers ask an AI tool questions such as 'Which video agency in Augsburg is good?' or 'How much does a brand film cost?' The tool may provide an answer naming two or three providers instead of a list of ten links. Being included matters for reaching those customers. Google also places AI answers above traditional results for many searches. Optimising only for rankings means focusing on a results page that people may no longer read in full.

What's the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO aims to get your page found and clicked. GEO aims to get your content cited and your name mentioned, often without a click. The two can support each other. A well-structured website with useful facts helps both conventional and AI search. The emphasis differs: AI systems can work with individual passages rather than whole pages. Direct, specific, verifiable answers are more useful source material than advertising claims such as 'leading' or 'first-class'.

What can you do to improve your AI visibility?

Answer questions directly. Put the answer at the beginning of a page, rather than after three introductory paragraphs. Use subheadings phrased as the questions people actually ask.

Use specific facts rather than adjectives. Include figures, prices, timeframes and sources. Verifiable information is more useful to search systems than vague copy.

Add structured data. Schema markup for Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ and Article helps machines understand who you are, what you offer and where you work.

Keep content up to date. Maintain articles as the topic changes and show when they were last updated. That helps readers and search systems assess how current the information is.

Make your brand easy to identify. Keep your company name and details consistent across your website, Google profile, LinkedIn and business directories. Search systems should be able to recognise Yoovo in Augsburg as the same business across all those sources.

Keep relevant AI crawlers accessible. Blocking relevant crawlers in robots.txt makes it harder for them to access your content.

How quickly does GEO work?

The honest answer is that it takes time. Structured data and revised pages may begin to have an effect after several weeks. Building a reputation as a source worth citing can take months. Many competitors have yet to start working on GEO, which creates opportunities, especially for local businesses.

What does video have to do with GEO?

More than you might expect. AI search systems increasingly use YouTube content, transcripts and subtitles. A clearly titled video with a good transcript can answer a question just as an article can. Both can come from one production. That's why we consider video production and visibility together: one shoot can provide a YouTube video, social clips and material for text content that AI tools can cite.

Article FAQ

How much does GEO cost?

As part of ongoing content support, it can cost less than a conventional SEO agency engagement because many measures, such as schema, structure and profiles, are one-off tasks. The ongoing work is maintaining content, which you also need for social media.

Can I do GEO myself?

You can cover the basics: answer questions directly, use facts instead of vague claims and maintain consistent profiles. Technical markup and content strategy are where many businesses bring in an agency.

Does GEO replace traditional SEO?

No. It builds on it. GEO won't fix a technically broken website. It makes sense to work on both together.

How do I measure whether GEO is working?

Regularly ask relevant questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and record whether and how your business is mentioned. Also monitor traffic from AI sources in your analytics.
