Video Content for Startups: What Works and What Wastes Money

The short answer: Startup video content works best when it shows people rather than simply promoting products. Founder content, behind-the-scenes updates and documentary formats are particularly useful. A common mistake is spending the entire budget on a polished brand film that nobody then sees. Consistency matters more than production polish.

We regularly work with startups and are producing our own YouTube documentary series about young companies and their ideas. Here's what we've learned about startup content that works.

Why does founder content work better than product content?

People follow people, rather than company logos. A startup without an established brand will struggle to attract attention with product-only videos. People need a reason to watch. A founder explaining why they're building something, what's proving difficult and what they're learning gives them one. A founder's account often grows faster than the company account while still benefiting the business, reaching customers, applicants and investors who research the founder before a meeting.

Which video formats are most useful for startups?

Founder formats: short, direct videos sharing industry perspectives, lessons and decisions. They need relatively little production work and make the person behind the business visible.

Build in public: show product development, first customers and setbacks. Over time, this can build a community that's already there when you launch.

Documentary formats: the most involved approach, but potentially very effective. A well-told short documentary can communicate your startup's story and credibility in eight minutes and remain useful for years.

What rarely makes sense: a traditional brand film as your first video. Without an existing audience or a clear question to answer, it can struggle to find viewers. Build reach first, then consider a brand film.

How much video content does a startup need each week?

Less than many people think, but consistently. Two or three short videos every week for several months are more useful than ten videos in launch month followed by silence. Regular publishing gives audiences repeated opportunities to get to know you. In practice, one well-planned shoot day a month can be enough. Four hours of footage can yield ten to fifteen clips and a longer YouTube format.

Which avoidable mistake costs startups the most?

Starting over. An expensive pattern we see is producing content for three months, stopping when results aren't immediate, then starting again from zero six months later. Startup video content builds over time. Reach in the first few weeks can be disappointing; after twelve months of consistency, it can look very different. Plan a budget you can sustain. Repeated half-hearted starts waste resources.

Do it yourselves or hire an agency?

At the beginning, make it yourselves with a phone. The first 50 videos are practice in consistency. An agency becomes useful when the founder no longer has time to plan and edit, and the content needs a production standard you can't achieve with a phone. Look for a team that can work at startup speed. Lengthy approvals and layers of account management don't suit a company that decides on Tuesday and films on Wednesday.

Article FAQ

Which platform should a startup start with?

The one your customers use, rather than whichever is fashionable. For B2B, LinkedIn is often the starting point and YouTube adds depth. For B2C, Instagram and TikTok are common choices. Using one channel consistently beats spreading yourselves thinly across four.

Does a startup need its own videographer?

Usually not. A regular freelancer or an agency with a monthly shoot day is more flexible and less expensive than a full-time role until you need content every day.
