Video Marketing for Medical Practices: What's Allowed and What Works

The short answer: Yes, medical practices can use video marketing. Factual information is permitted; misleading and sensational advertising is not. Germany's Healthcare Advertising Act, medical professional codes and patient confidentiality set the boundaries. Within those boundaries, video can serve two purposes: attracting patients who want to get a feel for the practice before their first appointment, and recruiting staff, which has become the more pressing issue for many practices.

Note: This article is not legal advice. Germany's Healthcare Advertising Act and your regional medical association's professional code are authoritative. If in doubt, ask the association for guidance.

What can doctors show in videos, and what should they avoid?

Factual information related to the profession is permitted: introducing the practice, explaining treatment processes, showing the team and providing general health information. Problems arise with content that German healthcare advertising law considers misleading or inappropriate. This includes promises of success, certain before-and-after comparisons, patient testimonial videos describing medical histories, and fear-based advertising. A useful rule is to inform rather than promise. Explaining how a treatment works is generally much less problematic than promising a particular outcome.

What about patients on camera, confidentiality and data protection?

This is a firm boundary. Even the fact that someone is a patient is covered by medical confidentiality. Identifiable patients should therefore only be shown with explicit written consent that can be withdrawn at any time. Even then, restraint is sensible: withdrawing consent cannot practically recall a video that has already been widely shared. A workable approach is to plan videos without patients. The team, premises, processes and doctors can support a full content plan. Check the background too: no patient records, screens or appointment lists in shot.

Which video formats work for medical practices?

A practice tour: makes the first visit less daunting. People arrive more relaxed when they have already seen the rooms and faces. This is particularly relevant for dentistry, paediatrics and psychotherapy.

Short educational videos: a doctor answers the questions patients ask every day in 60 seconds. These are often the same questions people type into Google and ChatGPT.

Meet the team: recruiting qualified staff is harder than attracting patients for many practices. An honest video of the team's working day can show more than a job advert.

Explaining a treatment: a factual video shows what happens during treatment, reduces anxiety and answers questions that might otherwise lead to a phone call.

Why invest in video if patients come anyway?

For many practices, that is true of patients covered by statutory health insurance. The situation changes for self-funded treatments, recruitment and selling or handing over a practice. In those situations, people actively compare their options. Video can build trust before the first contact.

What should a practice look for in an agency?

An understanding of the boundaries. An agency that treats a medical practice like a fitness studio is likely to create legal problems sooner or later. Ask specific questions: do you know Germany's Healthcare Advertising Act and medical professional codes? How do you handle consent? How do you keep patient data out of shot? An agency without clear answers is not the right fit for healthcare content.

Article FAQ

Can a medical practice post on Instagram and TikTok?

Yes. There is no general ban on these platforms. Healthcare advertising rules, professional codes and confidentiality requirements apply on every platform.

Can a doctor show a patient undergoing treatment?

Only with explicit written consent and within the legal limits. Before-and-after images are prohibited for certain procedures. A lower-risk alternative is to demonstrate the process on a model or explain it without showing a patient.

What does video marketing cost for a practice?

It depends on scope and frequency, from individual practice videos to ongoing support. We can discuss the details in a free initial call: info@yoovo-solutions.com.
